Hi, I'm John Rizvi, the patent professor, would you have an idea, it could be the greatest thing ever. It could revolutionize an industry solve the hunger problem, or change how we interact with our world. The problem is that until the idea is protected, it's also up for grabs. Under patent law, the first person to file a patent is the one who walks away with all the rights. This means you could lose out on all the money that comes with your idea, and watch one of your competitors get rich off of your invention. Filing for a patent, trademark or copyright is the first step in making money with your idea. This protects your idea and keeps others from profiting from it without paying you royalties. Now each one covers a different area of law, but all of them give you ownership benefits recognized by the federal government. Think of these types of registrations as the walls of a castle. They are the first line of defense against intrusion on your rights by hostile interests. At this stage, you should only discuss your idea with your attorney. Now, the second step is to tell other people about target people who would be interested in buying or using your product or service. Once you have the protection of the appropriate filing, you can do anything you like with the intellectual property it covers while still enjoying the right to sue for damages if anyone infringes on your idea. This process is known as validation. And it's the stage where you can start pitching and selling your idea to interested parties. Finally, the third step is to license your intellectual property. At this point, your idea is a valuable asset that companies will pay for the right to produce. Licensing is often used in mass scale production of patented products. You've seen them like toys, tools and books. When a company purchases a license to produce your idea, this is where your innovation becomes profitable. However, without the protections of the appropriate filings, you could lose out on opportunities. Protecting, validating and licensing your intellectual property can help you translate a great idea into the money you need to lead the life you've always wanted. I'm John Rizvi, the patent professor, and I've helped over 1000 inventors take the first step towards commercializing their idea. Don't let a great idea vanish because you didn't protect it. Let me help you keep the invention and the income from it safe.
