There is no law that requires a patent attorney to conduct the search. However, most inventors, when they do their search, they’re focusing on using keywords, and keywords are not accurate. What one person calls a hose, somebody else will call a pipe and you might miss the closest known patents. Additionally, there are marketing companies out there that track search terms online and you may inadvertently give away your idea. But when a patent attorney conducts a search, we go by classifications at the patent office, find the closest classifications to your idea, and go through and find the closest references. And that's the right way to have a search done.
