Hi, I'm John Rizvi, the patent professor, a question I get asked often is whether you can get a patent for a simple idea? The answer is absolutely. There's a myth out there that patents are only available for things that are complicated. People imagine inventors to be like that professor in the movie Back to the Future. And they expect to have like a flux capacitor before you go and see your patent attorney. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your idea does not have to be complex doesn't have to be complicated. In order to be patented. It only needs to be new, useful, and none obvious. Sometimes it's the simplest of ideas that change the world for the better. Today I'm going to go over a couple of examples. And I'll start with an idea that everyone's familiar with. And this is a coffee cup sleeve. The simple sleeve that slides on and off of a coffee cup. And Ajay Sorensen the inventor patented this, and he has revenues and licensing revenues of over a million dollars a year for 20 years. Another common Office product that everyone's familiar with is the post it note simply paper with removable glue. It's not rocket science, but the post it has annual revenues of a billion dollars a year. Another simple idea. And then the last one I want to talk about is the upside down label catch up bottle. Now this is actually two unique ideas combined into one. What is this special nozzle that doesn't leak when it's upside down. And that combined with the label that's upside down makes means that you can store it in this configuration. And that eliminates you having to hit the back of the bottle to get the ketchup out. So as you can see, patents don't have to be complicated. Your idea does not have to be complex or sophisticated. A simple idea that solves an everyday problem is absolutely patentable.
